Professional Experience

Senior Electrical Engineer - GT Engineering, LLC [Feb 2011 - Present]

  • Designed, requisitioned, and commissioned multiple Electrical Power Control Rooms for client, which included electrical switchgear and motor control centers from 480V through 15kV.
  • Created complete construction packages with AutoCAD for safe and efficient site installation and commissioning of electrical gear. Drawing packages contained; Onelines, schematics, wiring diagrams, load lists, instrument schedules, cable routing plans, grounding plans, cable schedules, and construction details.
  • Ensured proper installation of electrical Power Control Rooms and electrical equipment through subcontractor oversight at client facilities.
  • Worked with client in performing forensic analysis and troubleshooting of plant outages caused by electrical failures. Helped develop and implement plan to resolve issue and reinstate operation of the facility in a timely manner. Prepared and documented switching plan to bring two new Power Control Rooms online while leaving existing plant electrical system undisturbed.
  • Led site commissioning team in the acceptance testing of; Feeder cables up to 15kV, oil filled transformers, automatic and fixed power factor correction capacitors, and motor starter control circuits.
  • Kept track of subcontractor scheduling and workload progress during project construction.
  • Assisted client during circuit breaker and motor contactor testing, loop checks, and motor rotation tests.
  • Conceived scheme for safe manual transfer of source voltage using main-tie-main switchgear layout.
  • Built electrical model of client's facilities using SKM Power tools to simulate electrical system characteristics during steady state operation, motor starting, and under fault conditions. Used information for the planning of future load additions and new process units.
  • Developed electrical protective device settings and time-current curves from SKM model and programmed microprocessor-based relays to maximize personnel and equipment safety while minimizing plant down-time.
  • Collaborated with the client by reviewing 3rd part EPC's electrical designs and plans. Provided opinions and recommendations to client on how to best implement EPC's design in order to meet project requirements.
  • Led onboard review meetings with electrical equipment vendors during bid and manufacturing process.

Contract Engineer - Shell/Motiva Enterprise, Port Arthur, Texas [Feb 2010 - Feb 2011]

  • As a Jacobs employee; Seconded to Shell/Motiva as part of the Technical Assurance Commissioning/Start-up team responsible for the inspection and safe energization of all major electrical components pertaining to the Crude Expansion Project.
  • Integrated existing plant electrical model and Crude Expansion electricla model using SKM Power Tools for total power system analysis.
  • Applied relevant IEEE, NEC, and ANSI standards to provide a thoroough inspection and testing plan for 70MVA, 230kV/69kV distribution transformers, 69kV shielded power cable and large synchronous motors. Performed electrical forensic analysis on 70MVA distribution transformer to determine the root cause of the transformer failing a dielectric breakdown test.
  • Worked with electrical contractors to implement a procedure for the safe and proper energization of large distribution transformers without disturbing existing system operation. Developed procedures to educate plant operators and skilled craftsmen on novel and complex pieces of electrical equipment not typically found in Shell Refineries.
  • Coordinated with inter-disciplinary members of the project team in order to plan and execute commissioning of complicated process systems pertaining to the refinery expansion.
  • Teamed with Jacobs electrical engineers to provide relay setting information to Schweitzer Engineering for integrated plant wide SCADA system.

Design Engineer - Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc., Houston, TX [Jan 2008 - Feb 2010]

  • Electrical Engineer, Motiva Port Arthur Refinery Crude Expansion Project, Motiva Enterprises LLC, Port Arthur, TX. Scope of the project included expanding current Port Arthur Refinery to accommodate increased production of heavy crude refining.
  • Worked with Motiva Electrical Client to develop and implement overall plant protective device philosophy including overcurrent, line differential, transformer differential, and bus differential protection schemes.
  • Performed short circuit and load flow analysis of plant's power distribution system.
  • Responsible for coordination of overload and overcurrent protective device relays based on time-current characteristic curvers, and programming microprocessor based relays to monitor and protect vital electrical equipment.
  • Calculated incident energies and arc flash boundaries for all electrical equipment, 480V and above, to determine proper PPE requirements for all Field Personnel.
  • Designed and produced control schematics and wiring diagrams based on IEEE, NEC, and plant requirements.
  • Worked with drafting team to design and implement a plant-wide heat tracing system.
  • Interface with Powell's project and engineering team to ensure the proper design and construction of 9 Power Control Rooms based on Client specifications and industry standards.
  • Tested Power Control Rooms utilizing hi-pot, dielectric, megger, ductor, and point-to-point wiring testing.
  • Utilized technical knowledge to compose Electrical scope of Work Packages to be bid on by Construction Contractors.
  • Produced man-hour estimates and scope of work documents required to allocate resources for completing engineering projects in the field.
  • Collaborated with Motiva Client to develop overall switching map for Linemen to use during periods of scheduled outages based on new and existing distribution lines ranging from 69kV to 2.4kV.
